When his cousin Henry Bolingbroke whom he had sent into exile as a possible rival in 1398, returned to lead an army against him, he received widespread support. Richard surrendered to him, on the promise that his life be spared. Bolingbroke agreed and became King Henry IV. The deposed former king was imprisoned in the Tower of London and later moved to Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire. When Henry discovered Richard and accomplices were plotting Richard’s return to the throne, he had him murdered. How this was done remains a mystery. One rumour suggests that Richard was deliberately starved to death, although this does seem an unlikely fate for someone who needed to be dispatched with a degree of urgency. He was thirty-three and had been king for twenty-three years.

Both Henry IV and Richard II are the subjects of plays by William Shakespeare. Preacher John Ball’s evocative couplet When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then the gentleman? remains familiar to many and still strikes a chord with anyone concerned with inequalities in the world.
