Firestorm,
p.16
Thick gray clouds hovered in the early morning sky and blocked the sunrise. The team had their gear packed and stood in a line waiting.
“You did great work today.” Nova scanned the soot- and dirt-covered faces of her crew. “You saved a family. I have new orders from Miles. We’re going to split the team. Logan, JoJo, and Vince are gonna meet up with the rest of the Missoula crew working the main fire. My team has twenty-four-hour leave for rest and resupply.”
“You heard her.” Logan threw his arm forward. “Let’s march.”
Nova hefted her pack and followed Booth and Finn toward the clearing where they’d meet the chopper.
Today they’d saved a homestead from a fire not unlike the one that’d killed her parents. But Daniel and Teresa were safe, and Nova could live with that.
The danger wasn’t over, though.
Not by far.
Beyond the charred remains of the contained fire, the air thrummed with the distant roar of the real beast. A two-thousand-acre inferno headed west, hungry for the town of Snowhaven.
A NOTE FROM LISA
Dear Reader,
The second I found out my book was called Firestorm, I just knew I had to include one in the story! You know I love my explosions, and crazy shenanigans plots, but the chance to set the sky on fire? Oh yes, count me in for that—and packing in as many character cameos as I could.
Writing a series that’s the intersection of Susan May Warren’s story universe and the Last Chance County/Benson world was the most exciting thing I could’ve dreamed of. It’s been an adventure since I first approached Sunrise Publishing about being a lead author, and this series is everything I wanted out of jumping on board with Susie and the whole Sunrise family.
I’m excited for everything we have coming soon, like the EPIC conclusion to this series. And in the future, with more Last Chance Fire and Rescue books, more epic romantic suspense (Logan and Jamie, anyone??) and so many more plans I can’t even tell you about. Yet. If you love great books, be sure to subscribe to the Sunrise newsletter so you find out as soon as they’re available.
Firestorm was a party and a half, pure fun, and a pleasure to write. The whole series is epic, but these characters just crawled into my heart and decided who they were going to be. Who knew Charlie had a life, a daughter, a past he never told us about, and a son he didn’t know he had? God certainly surprised him when Charlie set out on a summer that was supposed to be his last. He planned to go out of this world on his terms, but God had a future for him.
Isn’t that how it goes?
We think we know how things will play out, or we make plans. God has better ones! Charlie went from a man with no future to a blessed guy with the woman he loved in his life, two great kids, and the will to take a shot at survival. Because he had a reason to live.
If you or someone you know is struggling to find a reason to live, please reach out to your local suicide hotline. There’s no shame in asking for help, and no reason to wait.
God numbers our days, and He walks each step alongside us. He is our peace, our hope. I know He holds you in His hands and will draw near to you as you draw near to Him.
I’m praying for you.
Firestorm had a thread from a famous hymn in it. Did you notice that through the series so far? I love old hymns, and when Susie suggested we include the stanzas as our spiritual thread for each of the stories I agreed it was a great idea.
Mine was:
For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live: If Jordan above me shall roll, No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul. It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well with my soul.
Jayne had to find that peace as much as Charlie. She had her own road to travel, and leaned on God to bring her to the life He had waiting for her.
I’m praying that God whispers His peace to your soul.
I have to say a huge thank you to my amazing reader community on Discord. Each of you is a dear friend. I enjoy chatting with you, swapping prayer requests and recipes, talking about great books, and supporting each other. Thank you so much for making this author thing not feel so solitary.
Thanks to Megan, Michelle, and Kate for contending with the edits and revisions I threw at you through this process. I learn so much with each series and continue to grow as a mentor and editor. It was a pleasure seeing these great ideas come to life as amazing books.
Until next time, friends.
Happy Reading,
Lisa
