Max had wanted to fly there with her, to support her and be by her side, but she didn’t want him there. She said next time, and he believed her, but this was something she needed to do. To go back to the city that held her past and wash it away.

“How long is Lily staying with us?” Davey asked.

“Just a month, and then we’re bringing her to college in Plattsburg. She’ll be right here by the airport and less than an hour away from Quinn. She can visit as often as she likes.”

“Quinn was so excited when Lily said she wanted to move here,” Lara said. “I’d be excited if I had a sister too.”

  “You’ve got me,” Davey said.

“But you ignore me,” Lara argued.

“All right, you two. Let’s not start bickering before Quinn gets back. Remember, tonight is special.”

“Do you think she’ll say yes?” Lara asked again, bouncing around like she’d eaten a bag of jellybeans.

“Of course she’ll say yes,” Davey said. “Why would she say no?”

  Max hoped Davey was right.

He grabbed Lara’s hand and they made their way in to wait for Quinn and Lily. After twenty minutes, Lara started to dance around his legs. “Lara, stand still.”

  “I can’t. I miss Quinn.”

He missed Quinn too, and he actually felt the same as Lara right now knowing she was going to be walking through the gate soon.

And there she was, striding toward him, smiling the whole way. Lily next to her, the two of them looking nothing like sisters, other than the pure joy on their faces like it was the best day of their lives.

Lara let go of his hand and ran forward to hug Quinn just like she did the first day Quinn arrived to stay. “Daddy’s going to ask you to marry him tonight. You’re going to say yes, right?”

Quinn stopped dead in her tracks, looked down at Lara, then up at him, her jaw hanging open.

  “Seriously, Lara,” Davey said.

Max couldn’t believe Lara just spilled it like that. Talk about ruining a romantic moment. He’d asked the kids about it this week while Quinn was gone. He wanted to make sure they were fine with it.

Not that he thought otherwise, because the kids had been thrilled over his and Quinn’s relationship, even though it’d taken her weeks to move out of her suite and into his room.

“Max?” Quinn asked him, looking unsure.

What the hell, he couldn’t back down now. “I told you I couldn’t control forever. Just like I can’t control Lara. So what do you say? Will you marry me?”

“If she doesn’t say yes,” Lily said, “then I’m beating her over the head, because all she talked about was you for the past week. I think she has baby fever, too.”

  “Lily!” Quinn said, looking mortified.

Yeah, his family was on board with this, along with hers.

“Looks like we’ve got everyone’s approval,” Max said. “I’m just waiting for your answer.”

  “Then my answer is yes.”
