“I love you too. Both of you.” I turned to grab onto Zander’s hand as he hugged my parents just as lovingly. He smiled down at me and we were instantly teleported to the beach that I landed on when I came back from the Underworld.
I looked around. “Oh, why are we back here?”
Zander wrapped me in his arms, his emerald eyes staring into my gray ones. “You’re starting a new journey. One that could last for a thousand years. I just wanted to make sure you were ready to have a simple Guardian angel by your side as you take on the world.”
A smile tugged at my lips and I snaked my arms around his neck. “A simple Guardian angel, huh?” I pretended to think about it for a moment. “Well, I guess if you were anyone else’s Guardian, I might have to think twice, but you are the Guardian of the one and only Divine One, sweetheart. If you could handle me for eighteen years, you can handle me for an eternity. I’ve been told that I can be stubborn and act like a child.”
He tightened his hold on me. “When you put it that way, I am a beast of a man and deserve the grandest of prizes.” His cocky smile showed as his eyes gleamed against the sunshine.
I clicked my tongue. “You’re a god among men, Zander Reid. I’ll give you anything you want.”
His eyes fell to my lips and he pressed a feather light kiss to them. His voice was a whisper against my skin. “Angel, I already have everything.”
When his lips were on mine again, the world fell away, and it was just how I liked it. Only the two of us, forever.

Nothing can beat this feeling. It’s total freedom to let my wolf run in the rain. She and I are like one being in moments like these, but still separate in mind. The droplets fall through our fur and cool off the warmth that our wolf skin generates. I can’t imagine not being a shifter. Humans don’t get to experience this, and they’re seriously missing out.
My large paws land on the soft, wet earth as I power through the woods within my pack’s boundaries. I could so easily just keep going and not look back. I want to be free like this all the time, not chained to some almost-alpha against my will. But, it’s my life.
I can hear his heavy breathing as he tries to keep up with me, and his wet dog scent fills my wolf’s nose. She doesn’t like it, and I can’t blame her. I’m faster than the others in my pack, even Nate. He thinks he’s the biggest and baddest, but he is just another alpha’s son. A sexy one, sure, but he’s not the one I want. I guess I don’t really want anyone. The shifter men are all the same, and I am so tired of it.
My father is the pack’s beta, the right hand wolf to Nate’s dad, Jackson Shaw. On the day I was born, my father promised me to Nate. He was only a year old at the time, so he didn’t have much say in our arranged marriage. If you asked him how he feels about it now, he’d say, “an alpha-born and beta-born union is ideal to strengthen a pack for future generations.” But, do I give a crap? Absolutely not.
I love my pack, and I want them to be strong and thrive on this land, but I don’t believe that marrying a man I don’t love is going to do the trick. Nate is not my fated mate, so it is a risky situation also. Even though fated mates don’t always happen, I still hold out hope that I’ll find mine and have a love like my parents have. If I was married to Nate and found my mate, that wouldn’t go down well.
My snout goes in the air, rain pelting down on it, and I sniff. Nate is getting closer, but I don’t want to deal with him right now. Let’s ditch him. I speak to my wolf in my mind, and she is more than happy with the idea. She doesn’t want Nate, and I thank the gods for it. If she wanted to be out here frolicking with the alpha’s son, licking the rain off his face, I’d probably vomit.
I dodge trees and jump over raised roots to escape him, picking up speed as I go. It’s harder to be tracked in the rain, so it’s giving me the perfect advantage. If my wolf could smile, I swear she’d be giving the toothiest grin. Nate’s scent fades, and I’m sure we’ve finally lost him when we jump into an empty clearing alone. The rain falls softer here, because the trees are thick overhead.
I can smell humans, and I figure I must be close to the college. I shouldn’t be so close to the town. If humans saw me, they’d flip out, and then I’d be in huge trouble. It’s forbidden for shifters to show themselves to a human. Oftentimes, the humans will go crazy, and if they start trouble they’re executed by the alpha. Not to mention that the exposed wolf is banished from the pack lands. As much as I hate it here, I wouldn’t survive on my own, and I’d miss my family.
Let’s turn around, girl. We've gone a bit too far today. My wolf snorts in disappointment. She loves to run in the mornings, and she longs to explore new places. We begin to turn the other way, and a new scent overwhelms us, stopping us in our tracks. It’s intoxicating, like nothing I’ve ever smelled before.
I turn to find the source of the delicious aroma and my eyes fall on a human man. He is standing in the clearing with me, his eyes wide, and his heartbeat quick. I can hear his heavy breathing as he surveys my wolf form. He won’t know that I’m a shifter. To him, I probably just look like a large wolf in the wild.
The man is dressed in dark jeans, a brown jacket and short hiking boots. His thick arms stretch his jacket sleeves, and it’s clear that he is built like a lumberjack, making him practically belong to the woods around him. I’m twenty-two and he can’t be any older than that, though he has a maturity and ruggedness about him, along with his short beard.
Judging by the backpack he carries, he’s likely a senior at the college out for a morning stroll before classes. He shifts from one foot to the other as he watches me. Rain drips from his brown hair that is hanging loose by his eyebrows.
“Wow. You’re beautiful,” he says in awe, with a deep baritone voice. I know he’s talking about my wolf, but it warms my human self to hear him say those words.
I sniff the air around us again and a longing fills me. I can feel a tug toward him like nothing I have ever felt before, and realization dawns on me. This human man is my fated mate. I’m officially screwed.

I’m always the only person to run through the woods in the morning. It’s well into fall and the cold is stifling. The towering pine trees call to me, though, reminding me of home. I haven’t had a home in a long time, but this comes close.
I came to this small mountain town in Vermont because the school accepted me, against all odds. My father didn’t want me to go to college ever since Mom died, but here I am, four years in and about to graduate with honors. I bet dad wasn’t expecting that, but he’s gone now too, so I can’t even rub it in his face. He was never much of a parent, but I’m proud of where I’ve landed myself, despite his lack of belief in me.
Okay, I’m not super stoked to be out in this sudden rain storm. A mile into my usual three mile hike, I’m drenched from head to toe, and to top it off, I’m face to face with a huge ass wolf. She stands on four massive paws with a shining coat of dark brown. She’s at least to my chest in height, and I’m not exactly a small guy. I’ve never heard of wolves getting that big.
The thing that stops me from turning and running like hell, though, are the wolf’s piercing green eyes. A hint of blue is blended into the green, making the most mesmerizing jade color. I don’t know why I stand here like an idiot just staring the beast down, but I’m frozen. Fear maybe? Either way, she has captured my attention.
“Wow. You’re beautiful,” I find myself saying.
The wolf bows her head at me like she acknowledges my words, and she licks her lips. Damn, she’s hungry. But why can’t I run? Her jade eyes follow my every movement as I slowly walk toward her. I’m clearly so incredibly dumb, honors be damned, but I am drawn to this deadly animal. It’s like an invisible force is pushing me forward.
The wolf steps away from me as I get closer, but I still reach my hand out and touch the top of her head. The fur is wet, but incredibly soft, and she is warmer than I imagined. Her eyes close, and she breathes out a heavy breath that fans my face.
She could open her mouth right now and kill me, but I feel almost safe standing this close to her. Instead of making me a meal, she turns and runs back through the trees to whatever home she belongs to, kicking up mud with her heavy footfalls. Maybe she has a pack out there somewhere, and maybe the cold isn’t what keeps the other students from the woods after all.
