The second British omnibus to feature Elric was Stormbringer (1993), containing The Sleeping Sorceress, The Revenge of the Rose, selected contents from The Bane of the Black Sword, and Stormbringer. This omnibus was retitled in the U.S.A. as Elric: The Stealer of Souls (1998), not to be confused with a later volume of the same name (q.v.).

  Collectors should note that, in the U.K., “The Tale of the Eternal Champion” omnibuses were published simultaneously in both hardcover and matching paperback formats. In the U.S.A., hardcover editions appeared ahead of their paperback versions.

  Elric: Tales of the White Wolf (1994) was an original anthology of Elric stories by Moorcock and others, edited by Edward E. Kramer & Richard Gilliam.

  Michael Moorcock’s Multiverse (1999) was a graphic novel illustrated by Walter Simonson, Mark Reeve & John Ridgway, originally serialised in twelve parts (1997/’98). It contained three interconnecting tales (each illustrated by a different artist), one of which—Ridgway’s—is “Duke Elric.”

  The Dreamthief’s Daughter (2001) was the first volume of a new Elric trilogy—in fact the only preconceived Elric trilogy—linking the albino with some of the many and various members of the Family von Bek. (When revising his books for the “Eternal Champion” omnibuses, Moorcock had the opportunity to change several character names in order to bring them in line with the developing “Von Bek” series, which had begun in 1981 with The War Hound and the World’s Pain although the name’s derivation goes back as far as Katinka van Bak in 1973’s The Champion of Garathorm.) Collectors should note that, also in 2001 (after the true first edition), The Dreamthief’s Daughter became the last of three Elric books sold as illustrated editions in slip-cases. This limited edition, signed by the author and artists (Randy Broecker, Donato Giancola, Gary Gianni, Robert Gould, Michael Kaluta, Todd Lockwood, Don Maitz & Michael Whelan), was followed two years later—still dated “2001”—by a smaller limited edition which was leather-bound and tray-cased. In 2013, The Dreamthief’s Daughter was retitled and revised (in the U.K.) as Daughter of Dreams (q.v.).

  Elric (2001) was another omnibus, containing The Stealer of Souls (or rather its five component novellas) and Stormbringer, as part of a “Fantasy Masterworks” series. In 2008, it was repackaged as part of the same publisher’s more exclusive “Ultimate Fantasies” sequence.

  The Elric Saga Part Three (2002), another omnibus, contained The Fortress of the Pearl and The Revenge of the Rose.

  The Skrayling Tree: The Albino in America (2003) is the second part of the trilogy beginning with The Dreamthief’s Daughter. In 2013, The Skrayling Tree was retitled and revised (in the U.K.) as Destiny’s Brother.

  The White Wolf’s Son: The Albino Underground (2005) is the third and last part of the trilogy. Although this Elric sub-series can be read as a standalone adventure (as, indeed, can each volume), brief mention is made of events slotting, chronologically, into those described within Stormbringer. In 2013, The White Wolf’s Son was retitled and revised (in the U.K.) as Son of the Wolf.

  The Elric Saga Part IV (2005), another omnibus, contained The Dreamthief’s Daughter, The Skrayling Tree and The White Wolf’s Son.

  Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer (2007) was a graphic novel illustrated by Walter Simonson, originally serialised in four parts (2004–’06), and is a prequel to the novel Elric of Melniboné.

  Elric: The Stealer of Souls (2008) was the first volume in a series of six Elric omnibuses published (in the order the main novels were written) under the collective title of “Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melniboné,” each containing fiction and non-fiction. The first volume’s fiction includes The Stealer of Souls and Stormbringer. Elric: To Rescue Tanelorn (2008) was the second volume, a collection of Elric (or Elric-related) short fiction. Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress (2008) was the third volume, including the novels The Sleeping Sorceress and Elric of Melniboné. Duke Elric (2009) was the fourth volume, including The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, the Duke Elric graphic-novel script and a novella, “The Flaneur des Arcades de l’Opera.” Elric in the Dream Realms (2009) was the fifth volume, including The Fortress of the Pearl, the Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer graphic-novel script and a short story, “A Portrait in Ivory.” Elric: Swords and Roses (2010), the sixth and final volume, included The Revenge of the Rose, a Stormbringer (unmade) movie screenplay, and the first of two new novellas, “Black Petals” (2008), the second being “Red Pearls” (2011). At the time of writing, these novellas are being revised and incorporated, with much new material, into a brand-new Elric novel (due 2022).

  Elric: Les Buveurs d’mes (2011) was an original, collaborative novel (in French) by Moorcock and Fabrice Colin, for which there seems no imminent sign of an English-language edition.

  Daughter of Dreams (2013) was a revised retitling of The Dreamthief’s Daughter; Destiny’s Brother (2013) was a revised retitling of The Skrayling Tree; Son of the Wolf (2013) was a revised retitling of The White Wolf’s Son.

  Elric of Melniboné and Other Stories (2013) was the first volume in a set of seven Elric omnibuses published (in narrative-chronology order) as part of a larger series, “The Michael Moorcock Collection,” each containing similar long & short fiction and non-fiction to the “Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melniboné.” It was followed by Elric: The Fortress of the Pearl (2013), Elric: The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (2013), Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress and Other Stories (2013), Elric: The Revenge of the Rose (2014), Elric: Stormbringer! (2014), and Elric: The Moonbeam Roads (2014) containing Daughter of Dreams, Destiny’s Brother and Son of the Wolf.

  In 2019, Centipede Press began publishing limited editions of nine Elric novels—which have all (to date) sold out prior to publication—each accompanied by the relevant shorter fiction required to create an overall narrative chronology. At the time of writing, these volumes have been Elric of Melniboné, The Fortress of the Pearl and The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (all 2019), The Sleeping Sorceress (2020) and The Revenge of the Rose (2021), with Stormbringer, The Dreamthief’s Daughter, The Skrayling Tree and The White Wolf’s Son to follow. The first three volumes have also been produced as outsized, slip-cased hardcovers offered to subscribers only.

  Which brings us at long last to Saga’s Elric saga volumes. Unlimited and therefore available to all, Saga Press’s three uniform omnibus editions—published from 2022 to commemorate sixty glorious years since the character’s very first appearance in print—contain eleven novels in order of narrative chronology: Elric of Melniboné, The Fortress of the Pearl, The Sailor on the Seas of Fate and The Weird of the White Wolf in The Elric Saga Volume One: Elric of Melniboné, The Vanishing Tower, The Revenge of the Rose, The Bane of the Black Sword and Stormbringer in The Elric Saga Volume Two: Stormbringer, and The Dreamthief’s Daughter, The Skrayling Tree and The White Wolf’s Son in The Elric Saga Volume Three: The White Wolf.
