Rock Gods Don't Date Pop Princesses (Break the Rules Book 1),
p.31
“Let’s ante up, then,” I say, joining him.
We make our way to the big table in the back with the others.
With my family.
The family that chooses me.
Always.
I stumble into my suite after midnight, too tired to even kick off my shoes before toppling onto my bed. Jonah’s bachelor party is officially in the bag. Just the wedding left now and then I’m free to—
“Close your eyes, Knox.”
I startle, but I do as she says. “Harmony?” I ask. “That you?”
“Yes, it’s me,” she answers, slightly annoyed. “You can’t recognize my voice when you hear it?”
“When I’m this drunk? No.” She laughs from… somewhere across the room. “What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to be here.”
“Well…” I hear her now at the foot of the bed. I feel her warm hands on my ankles, slowly crawling along my legs as she climbs up. “Technically, the rules said you couldn’t see me before the wedding, so…” She mounts my waist. As she leans over, I feel a soft fabric brush against my eyes. “You’re going to wear this.”
“Oh…” I laugh as she wraps the blindfold around my head, covering my eyes. “That’s quite the loophole.”
“Yes, it is.”
“You’re a little rule breaker, aren’t you?”
“I learned from the best.” Harmony kisses me softly on the lips. “Now, be a good boy… and no peeking…”
She kisses me again, her lips moving to my cheeks and chin, down my neck and chest as she plucks the buttons on my shirt open. She descends, her kisses warm, her body rubbing against mine in all the right places.
I chuckle to myself, lost in the sensations. Blind to everything but her. Her. Harmony Max. My muse. My partner. My…
“Hey, do you want to get married?”
Harmony stops. “What?”
“I mean…” Panic grips me in the dark. “I’m not asking you to.”
“Oh, thank god.”
“Yeah, that’d be—”
“Crazy.”
“Very. I just meant, you know, in general. Do you — someday — want to get married?” I ask.
Harmony takes a breath. “Um… I don’t know. Maybe. I guess.”
“Just maybe?”
“Just maybe, yeah.”
“Okay.” I nod. I settle back. “You can continue.”
I wait a moment, but Harmony doesn’t move.
“Harm?” I ask.
“Do you want to get married?” she asks.
“Not right now,” I answer.
“Oh, of course not.”
“But someday, sure. Maybe. When I’m old and washed up and ready to slow down.”
“How old would that be?” she asks.
“I don’t know. Eighty?”
She laughs. “Eighty?”
“Yeah, I should be ready to stop touring by then, I think.” I raise my head as if to look at her, but I can’t see a thing through the blindfold. “Harmony?”
“Hm?”
I smile. “You okay?”
“I’m fine. I’m, uh…” She hesitates. “I want to say something, but I don’t want you to take it the wrong way.”
“I’m listening,” I say, holding my head up and waiting for her words to drop.
“I… don’t think about the future much. Anymore, I mean.”
I nod. “All right.”
“Before, my life was nothing but the next thing,” she says. “The next pageant. The next possible crown. The next whatever. I never got the chance to just live in the moment because what I was currently doing was never good enough. But… right now? I am living the happiest days of my life.”
I slide the blindfold off my eyes. “You are?”
She nods, smiling. “I’ve never been allowed to just live in the moment, and that’s all I want to do right now. With you. I want to savor these days. Writing our music. Playing our songs. Just being us, all day, every day, without all that other stuff. If that’s all right.”
I grin. “That’s all right.”
“Yeah?”
I sit forward and wrap my arms around her. “Yeah,” I whisper, holding her close. “Let the future be future’s problem.”
“And — someday — when the time comes…” She kisses me again, just as softly as before. “Maybe.”
I kiss her back. “I’m good with maybe,” I say.
Harmony cups my face. “You’re breaking the rules,” she says with a scolding eye on my raised blindfold.
“That’s what I do, baby.”
We kiss again. We kiss to now. To our future selves. To those stupid kids in the past who just couldn’t get it right.
I kiss my muse. And she kisses hers.
And our music plays through the night.
This.
This is why I became a rock god.
