I raise my eyebrows. I like this larger sassy woman. She cuts through the shit.
“Truth,” I say and then in a baby voice say to Izzy, ”Truuuuffff.”
Jonathan gets up and heads out the door. He must be irritated with me.
But then he walks back in with our “tribe” behind him. Mom, Dad, Cindy, Darlene, Kathy.
“You aren’t supposed to be in here yet, family. Just a few more minutes.” My nurse-slash-going-to-be-my-friend-one-day says.
“Hang on now, you want them in here,” Jonathan rebuts.
“And why is that?” My nurse woman is putting her hands on her hips.
I whisper to Izzy, “I think you are going to witness your first human fight.”
“Because I am putting my money where my mouth is.” Jonathan comes over to the side of the bed and puts a small box down on my chest between Izzy and her pink-blanket-wrapped-sausage self, and me.
I glare at him.
Cindy looks at me.
“What is that?” Dad yells loudly.
I can’t keep my eyes off Jonathan.
I am so tired, I am hoping this isn’t just a dream.
“Open it!” Darlene shouts.
I take my free hand, and with the help of my teeth, get the small blue box open.
Inside is a quaint and beautiful diamond ring.
Everyone in the room gasps.
Jonathan comes over and slips it on my finger.
“You have no choice, Emily. You will be my wife,” He says and he smiles.
My mother shrieks.
“Mister, you done good,” My nurse lady says.
“You always did like bossing me around, Mister Clark, and I guess I am finally giving in.”
Jonathan comes over and gives me a kiss. The girls start clapping as the nurse ushers them out.
“It’s all special and stuff, but I need to get this baby on the tit.” The nurse has quite the way with words.
Jonathan goes to leave the room and I stop him. “Where are you going?”
“To fill out the birth certificate.”
“Make sure it says Clark at the end,” I say and I make him smile.
The nurse and I are alone and she is helping me with the baby. Showing me how to feed it and care for it in certain ways.
“You got a good one there, Miss Hawkins,” She says as she takes my blood pressure.
“Ya, she’s pretty cute.”
“Ya, that baby’s cute, but that man who put that large rock on your hand, he’s fine as can be,” says large sassy nurse.
“I never thought about it like that before, but yes, he is a good one.”
“No one ever got a baby and a ring on the same day before in this hospital. No ma’am you’re the first.”
“I like being a trail blazer,” I kid.
I look down at Izzy.
“I hope you do too, Izzy,” I say as I stroke her little head.
“What is the date and time anyway?” I ask the nurse.
“It is May 10th at 6 in the morning, ma’am. You were in labor for 6 hours. Your little baby was born at 5:02 in the morning.”
“No wonder I am so tired,” I say as I yawn.
“You’re tired cuz you just spat a Cabbage Patch Kid out of your YingYang,” The nurse says.
We laugh.
I now have my very own Cabbage Patch Kid: Izzy.
