  * non-speaking role

  Other non-speaking roles (Attendants, Servants, Musicians, a Captain and Soldiers), while not necessary to a performance, may be played by actors as available.

  * * *

  1 As evidence of doubling as a common practice in Elizabethan theatre, Kastan (1H4, 354) cites an account in Chambers (Elizabethan, 2.364) that a Swiss visitor to London in 1599 reported attending a performance of Julius Caesar at the Globe in which forty roles were played by ‘approximately fifteen actors’. Presumably a company on tour would have had even fewer.

  ABBREVIATIONS AND REFERENCES

  Quotations from and references to Shakespeare plays other than 2 Henry IV are from individual volumes of The Arden Shakespeare, Third Series, when available; from The Arden Shakespeare, Second Series, when not. Biblical quotations are from the Bishops’ Bible (1568) except when the Geneva Bible (1560) is indicated. In all references, the place of publication is London unless otherwise noted. Abbreviations of parts of speech are those used in the OED (2nd edn).
